È stata una notte di passione e inaspettate sorprese al Microsoft Theater di Los Angeles: la cerimonia di premiazione degli Emmy 70 ha riservato più di un colpo di scena. Tra proposte di matrimonio, toccanti discorsi di ringraziamento e qualche gustoso fuori programma, gli Oscar della TV hanno decretato i vincitori dell'annata.

Game of Thrones (al ritorno dalla sua "pausa tecnica") rimane la miglior serie drama, riuscendo a contenere la concorrenza di The Crown e fruttando una statuetta anche per Peter Dinklage. Come miglior attrice però la spunta Claire Foy. Dopo il lancio mondiale del trailer di Quello che non uccide e il suo passaggio al Festival di Venezia, l'attrice inglese si conferma lanciatissima nel panorama hollywoodiano.

Dopo tanti passaggi a vuoto, anche #The Americans alle battute finali conquista un posto al sole, con il premio (meritatissimo) a Matthew Rhys.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel e L'assassinio di Gianni Versace dominano la serata

In campo comedy invece stravince a sorpresa The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. La serie era data per favorita, ma impressiona comunque come porti a casa la statuetta per miglior comedy e altri quattro premi, tra cui miglior attrice per Rachel Brosnahan, nonostante la spietata concorrenza di categoria. 

Il vero colpo di scena però si è consumato nelle categorie dedicate alle miniserie per la TV. #American Crime Story: l'assassinio di Gianni Versace s'impone sia come miglior miniserie sia con il suo attore protagonista Darren Criss. L'annuncio del vincitore strappa una smorfia di stizza a Benedict Cumberbatch, dato per super favorito per il suo Patrick Melrose e beffato per l'ennesima volta. 

Nella categoria Reality Show invece stravince RuPaul con il suo Drag Race. Il Saturday Night Live s'impone per la 65esima volta come miglior programma di sketch, mentre nella guerra dei talk show d'intrattenimento porta a casa la statuetta John Oliver.

The Handmaid's Tale e Stranger Things sono i grandi delusi della serata: così come la miniserie Patrick Melrose, non riescono a finalizzare nemmeno una statuetta. Il vero colpo di scena l'ha però messo a segno Glenn Weiss, il regista dell'ultima edizione degli Oscar. Salito sul palco per il discorso di rito, ne ha approfittato per fare la proposta di matrimonio in ginocchio (e in mondo visione) alla sua amata.
